At Stanford, inclusion is a ‘lifelong learning process’
The Diversity and First-Gen Office (DGen) at Stanford is the hub of support for first-generation and low-income students and the nucleus for inclusion and diversity programs. The office is playing a key role in Stanford's yearlong OpenXChange initiative.
Research by Stanford faculty – including Geoffrey Cohen, a professor of education and psychology, and Hazel Markus, a professor of psychology – has shown that simple interventions can contribute to a strong sense of belonging among first-generation and low-income college students, buffering them against the stresses and challenges of their first year in college.
